What To Do If Your Power Goes Out
March 26, 2025
Power outages are always a possibility, whether it's due to a storm or a technical issue; being without power can be a major inconvenience. They can happen without warning and can last for a few hours or even days. If you're caught without power, there are some things you can do to stay safe and comfortable until the power is restored.
Steps to Take If The Power Goes Out
If you are without power, the most important thing to do is stay calm. This is only a temporary situation, and it will eventually end.
Check to see if the power outage is affecting just your home or neighborhood or if it is a widespread outage. If it is just your home or neighborhood, check to see if there are any downed power lines nearby. If so, do not go near them and call your local utility company to report the downed line.
Turn off all electrical appliances and lights, except for one light so you will know when power is restored. This will help avoid your appliances being affected by an electrical surge.
Only open your fridge and freezer sparingly to help preserve your food.
Depending on the weather, do your best to regulate your temperature. Gather blankets if it is cold outside, or drink water to keep yourself cool.
Tips For Power Outages
One way to prevent yourself from losing power at home or at your business, is to install a generator. A generator will help keep your power on if a circuit breaks or the city grid goes down. It will help keep the lights on, the air conditioning going, and your food cold. Generators are also beneficial for reasons other than power outages, they can be run by more environmentally friendly energy source and help bring your electricity bill down.
While power outages are rare it’s important to be prepared for one. Some items that are helpful to have on hand in case of an emergency are:
A Flashlight or Headlamp
Batteries
Water
First Aid Kit
Non-perishable food
Portable chargers
